Typescript diary, loosely based on entries in volumes 1 and 2 of Elmore's diary held at UNC; entries are rearranged and embellished in a conscious literary style in anticipation of publication; copy held by SCL includes quote from letter, 6 Nov. 1964, from Frank H. Elmore to E.L. Inabinett, "...the typed copy I left with you is an abridgement made by Grace Elmore" Includes and reminiscences including comments on the 1860 political campaign; describing the house, garden and a typical day in her mother's life; names and duties of the African American slaves; smallpox and treatment of servants. Elmore refers to herself as a Secessionist, "I am my father's daughter, a close follower of Calhoun, born and bred in States Rights..."; other entries discuss work at the Wayside Hospital with Mrs. [Mary Amarinthia] Snowden; assisting with the bazaars; burning of Columbia, and adjusting to social conditions of Reconstruction following the Civil War.
